Vienna Rest Day

We walked so many miles that it’s hard to call today a rest day. There’s scaffolding around our hotel, an amazing place where Mozart once held concerts (according to our Music of Vienna walking tour), but it was disconcerting to hear workers outside the window scraping on the facade first thing in the morning. We closed the drapes and had a lazy morning knowing that our chosen destination didn’t open until 10am. We had a nice breakfast at the Kurkonfitorei Oberlaa at the suggestion of a hotelier. They have incredibly beautiful pastries in their glass cases, but we stuck with coffee, eggs, and bread. After breakfast we went to the nearby Albertina Museum and saw their exhibit, From Monet to Picasso, a mix that included many schools of painting, beautiful works that we took our time to enjoy. There was also photography and some modern art. The exterior museum stairs that had been illuminated yesterday looked like regular steps, very confusing…. We have photographic evidence that there was art on those steps yesterday!

Afterwards we bought lunch and relaxed a bit. Then we walked past amazing buildings and gardens along the ring road. On our way back to the center, we happened upon the Palais Daun-Kinsky, only partly opened, but with beautiful statues and a painted ceiling with a mural so beautiful that we were astounded to almost have it to ourselves.

To finish off the afternoon, we spent an hour on a walking tour of music in Vienna, a tour covering artists from Mahler to Mozart. We peeked into some small chapels and beautiful squares. We sat at an outdoor cafe on the main drag and watched all the people walking past as we relaxed. Finally we picked up dinner to go and returned to our hotel. Vienna is so full of art and architecture, we will have to return sometime and experience more.
